  3. GENETIC DISEASES: Proprioceptive        
  4. Degeneration Disease

  6. Proprioceptive Degeneration Disease     
  7. (PDD), characterized by waning and      
  8. eventual loss of the proprioceptive     
  9. sense, which locates the human body and 
  10. limbs in space. Victims are unable to   
  11. locate themselves, and must live in     
  12. houses filled with mirrors to provide   
  13. constant visual feedback to ordinary    
  14. activities. Cause of the disease is     
  15. unknown, though it is grouped in the    
  16. standard taxonomy of genetic diseases.  
  17. First described in the mid-20th century,
  18. the disease appeared in large numbers   
  19. beginning in the 2020s, and reached a   
  20. proportion approaching 1000 new cases a 
  21. year worldwide. The effects are         
  22. irreversible. Chromosome eleven contains
  23. a genetic marker for the disease, but   
  24. the exact location of the affected gene 
  25. or genes seems to move at random.       
  26.  
  27. Theoretical treatment was through       
  28. extended hibernation in the Vega        
  29. starship cryofields, which accounted for
  30. the high percentage of victims among the
  31. passengers. Effectiveness of this       
  32. treatment is unknown.
