- Proprioceptive Degeneration Disease
- (PDD), characterized by waning and
- eventual loss of the proprioceptive
- sense, which locates the human body and
- limbs in space. Victims are unable to
- locate themselves, and must live in
- houses filled with mirrors to provide
- constant visual feedback to ordinary
- activities. Cause of the disease is
- unknown, though it is grouped in the
- standard taxonomy of genetic diseases.
- First described in the mid-20th century,
- the disease appeared in large numbers
- beginning in the 2020s, and reached a
- proportion approaching 1000 new cases a
- year worldwide. The effects are
- irreversible. Chromosome eleven contains
- a genetic marker for the disease, but
- the exact location of the affected gene
- or genes seems to move at random.
-
- Theoretical treatment was through
- extended hibernation in the Vega
- starship cryofields, which accounted for
- the high percentage of victims among the
- passengers. Effectiveness of this
- treatment is unknown.
